I am new with the iphone and I look though numerous threads before starting this one. I just wanted to know if it is possible to get a virus on the iphone using Gmail, Yahoo or Comcast? I mean I am not going to try to open email like exe. or emails I don't recognize

Thank You
YB

I would assume since the iPhone OS is somewhat of a watered down version of OSX then the likelihood of getting a virus through email on an iPhone would be similar to that of getting a virus through email on a Mac.....not very likely, although theoretically possible.

Someone please correct me if I'm incorrect on this.

Don't worry about it right now. Thus far we have not seen any type of internet virus for the iPhone. I'm not quite sure how harmful a virus can be with all of the restrictions the iPhone has. I'm sure others can elaborate more and this is also a question I have, but as far as I know, a virus can potentially come via email anytime...

even if you got a virus mailed to you in .exe form, you couldn't even open it if you wanted to.

I'm fairly sure that you can't directly open an .ipa file.

Edit: I just sent an .ipa to myself and it's not tappable.

Of course attacks are possible. Nothing is perfect.

I don't recall any security hole in email, but there have been many software updates since the beginning, plugging holes in other programs, most especially Safari.

For instance... last November (read more here).

In fact, the very first iPhone update ever was rushed out because a Safari attack method was going to be publicly revealed.

Close to impossible, I'm sure now that people have seen this thread someone is going to try to make one though
