I'm interested to hear if you have any wild guess thoughts about what if anything Apple may say about the upgraded Vision Pro we are going to see very soon.

It's pretty guaranteed to come with an M4 or M5 chip which is going to be a BIG jump in CPU and even more in GPU over the M2.

So Firstly....

Do you think Apple will release the full power of the new chip they will be fitting to allow it to offer devs more capability to use the extra CPU/GPU power.

Or do you think they will pretty much lock any real performance improvements down, and simply (for example) clock it really low, so it's just a tiny tiny bit faster than the current M2 but it will be much more economical on battery life. So this will just be more of a battery life extension upgrade as opposed to actually using the power of the new chip upgrade?

And secondly....

A bit of a fun wild guess:
Do you think Apple will add/change any other aspect of the hardware/sensors etc in this upgraded model in any other way?

I presume it's not as simple as just popping an M5 into the holes on the mainboard than the M2 was occupying.
Perhaps they took advantage of a boar redesign which will hold the new chip, to make some other small mid-cycle improvements.

Any guesses you'd care to make?

That's just a general thread about anyone who'd going to be buying it.

I'm asking specifically for any guesses anyone thinks could happen when we see what Apple have been doing.
As said, if someone puts a large team onto upgrading the device (changing the mainboard) to take a new M series chip.
Might you not at the same time (even if it's only on the mainboard) make some other improvements.

Remember the Current Vision Pro was supposed to come out about 2 years before it actually did, and a lot has been learned by Apple during those years, so perhaps we could expect to see some other mainboard improvements?

I think another head strap was rumored to be included with it based on research apple did about the feedback they got. Other than that, this year all we’re getting is a new chip.

Beyond though? I think the vision air will basically be a stripped down Vision Pro. Same resolution. Lighter. Cheaper. Future Vision Pro will be where they test larger upgrades like an even higher resolution and possibly some other un named features. Honestly I can’t even think of much they could add to this. Upgraded speakers? The Vision Pro 1 is already so good all they really need to do is make it cheaper and lighter so it’s hard to think where they could do. Better pass through?

If the rumours are true, it’s also going to come in at the same price which I just find ludicrous. They should throw in the M5 processor, a better head strap and knock some money off the price.

I don’t doubt that the M4/M5 AVP will perform better than the current model, though how much remains to be seen. Otherwise, why bother changing?

But, as discussed in the other thread, it won’t make sense for devs to release software that requires the updated chip, essentially limiting themselves to an even smaller market.

I agree with you about the devs wanting to support the original and much faster M4 / M5 version.
that's not to say however that things like Framerates, Image clarity, Smoothness of certain features could not be improved on the upgraded model.

I'm sure most of us would not wish that devs take no advantage to make things that run and look better/smoother on the much faster system.

Of course, I'm sure some devs will of course wish to push the envelope as far as they can and will release some things that may run great on the new version, but are not pleasant to use (choppy visuals) on the older model.

Would we really want devs not to use the power of a GPU which may be 4 or more times faster to deliver some experiences that are not currently possible to offer at an acceptable quality?

That would be like releasing a new console, and never releasing anything for it that can't also run on the previous console and never taking advantage of the new one. We'd not want that would we?

Want is exactly why they won’t. If just as many, or fewer, of these updated units are sold then only half or fewer of an already very small user base to begin with will not want to run whatever app app you produce which makes zero sense for any developer who is serious about making money. It’s better for developers to include more and exclude less.

There isn’t much of a point to spending your time adding in or designing around that truth.

Apple may choose to do it in VisionOS and perhaps in the Apple Intelligence features on the device, enabling the built in apps to do more or look better to sell more product, but I don’t think most 3rd party devs will follow suite.

If and when Apple releases a Vision standard model or Vision Air that costs half, weighs less and thus sells more than the number of devices already out there, then I could see devs making use of any hardware it has that’s better than the original Vision Pro, but again, especially at first, why release an app that excludes the original group of users who went all-in and bought the device when nobody else would?

That wouldn’t seem to me to be smart unless you’ve got a killer app that requires the new hardware in order to properly function or if you’re Apple and want to force upgrades via forced obsolescence, which is standard Apple operating procedure in some areas.

If it sells way more than the original and this refreshed version, and we’re talking about several million devices instead of the 500,000 or 1 million users the older model and this upcoming refresh has, like 2 - 3 million or more devices then all bets are off and devs will likely take advantage of the new hardware where they can.

If I’m wrong and this refresh sells millions of devices then all bets are off and it’ll happen faster. Honestly though, if this is just a niche refresh like the refreshed AirPods Max USB-C or the refreshed AirPods Pro 2 USB-c edition, I’m not paying upwards of $4,000 for it again.

If prices comes down by half and they produce a lighter device with mostly improved specs, I’d be in and wouldn’t think twice about it even if adoption of those features by third party dev’s was slow out of the gate but VisionOS or Apple Intelligence is improved.

Since it seems to me that an up-to-date and fixed Siri could be enough of a selling point for some like me to upgrade if it were designed well and I could use it right along with my hands to do more than ask it to play music or about the scores of sports games I care about then that alone might be worth it if the price was right.

We’ll see.

Im hopeful they have better lenses. I think they don't do the displays 100% justice. That said, I just hope that they can tether to a powerful PC/Mac more easily so that the horsepower of a better machine can unlock this device for more immersive and interactive experiences.
