Visiting US - all models (un)locked?

Hi all,

I will be visiting New York (I'm from Amsterdam, the Netherlands) next week and would like to pick up an iPhone 6s 64GB. Already found out I need the A1688 model, but on the Apple.com website I see you have to choose a carrier.

Does that mean all iPhones sold at Apple stores in the US are carrier locked? Or can I just walk in and buy one regardless of the carrier, as long as the model# is right?
