I will be going to the USA for a couple of weeks in late summer.

I am now looking for a pay-as-you-go data plan for my unlocked iPhone (1st generation). Up to 500 MB should be more than enough. Just one month contract period.

Unfortunately, after having researched, I am not more confused than ever. The AT&T website is not really helping me. Sprint: No idea. Virgin Mobile: No SIM card only plans. ...?

So, if you can give me some pointers, I am more than grateful.

Thanks!

I really tried to find such a plan on the AT&T website, but I was unfamiliar with their system.

So, at AT&T, it is $20 for 100 MB on a GoPhone plan. That's 20¢ per MB, which is OK for prepaid.

Virgin Mobile offers 50 MB for $20.

With T-Mobile and Sprint, I couldn't find a prepaid data plan.

I also found this offer:

"The iPhone USA Prepaid Sim Card is a great choice for International Visitors with an unlocked iPhone. This sim comes with 300 airtime minutes, free weekends, and yes (Unlimited Data). Telephone number is Washington DC (202). Refill monthly as you need by purchasing a refill pin online here. No contract, no credit check."

Yeah as your finding out PAYG is not as popular here as it is back home in the UK, and the offerings are pretty scarce, you can go in to any AT&T store or TMobile Store who will sell you a prepaid SIM, the mobile market here is crap.
