In both Windows XP and OS X, switching between the computer's built-in speakers and a set of headphones/external audio devices/etc is blissfully easy. You don't have anything plugged into the headphone jack, the internal speakers are active. You plug a pair of headphones into the jack, the speakers stop making sound and you hear sound from your headphones. You unplug the headphones and the internal speakers are re-enabled.

However, I put Vista (wanted a 64-bit Boot Camp OS, didn't have access to 7, and XP 64-bit isn't supported) on my Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 15", 2.4 GHz i5).

Now, Vista's sound handling is completely borked. The sound starts off playing out of the computer's speakers- so far so good. I plug in my headphones- and nothing happens! The applications that were playing sound out of the speakers continue to play sound out of the speakers. If I open a new application it plays sound out of the headphones. But to get the applications which were open when the headphones were plugged in to output from the headphones, I have to close and re-open them.

I guess I could set the headphones as the default audio device- except I'd have the same exact problem in reverse when trying to go from headphones to the speakers! Derp.

I did a search (Vista and sound) and was unable to find anything helpful. Please, anyone, if you have any insight as to how I can get Vista's sound to work like XP and OS X (as described above), I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
