Greetings.

I began to make ambient electronica music with Logic on my Mac a few years ago and a lot of the artists I listen to has been working with visual artists.

For example the mexcian electronica musician Murcof, did some live shows with the visual artist duo xx+xy: http://www.xxxyvisuals.com/

I like it a lot and I want to know more about it and eventually learn it.

How do you start out? What programs do visual artists use? Anything I should know/read before starting?

The term "visual artist" is a really broad one... are you speaking specifically of "visualists" or VJs?

if so, check out Create Digital Motion, a sister blog of Create Digital Music. (http://createdigitalmotion.com/)

The site has lots of info about integrating music and live visuals, projection mapping, etc.

There are many VJ programs on mac and PC and many visualists write their own software in Max/MSP or Processing..
