VLC Can it damage your disc drive

I just had my optical drive replaced on my 2 year old iMac as it was struggling to read discs. When it just dawned on me that I have a few region 1 DVDs as i'am in Australia my drive is set to region 4 by playing region 1 discs on VLC can it affect the laser of the drive?

nope, VLC shouldn't damage your hardware.
