Some certain mkv files refuse to play on VLC. All it does is give you the loading bar forever. It's not a problem generally with mkv files as it plays smoothly, it's just certain mkv files. I suspect the trouble might lie with the encoding because when its converted to other formats like AVI, it plays smoothly. Running latest VLC the 1.1.7 but problem has persisted with previous versions btw.
 
I had issues with Avatar. Only the computer rendered scenes weren't smooth.
But after changing the settings of vlc, everything worked for me.
Ask google for the details :)
 
i had the same problem as you. when i checked the default player, instead of 1.1.7 it said 1.2.0-git, which I can not find on my computer and im not sure where it is getting that version from as i have never downloaded a version via git. I did a open with, other chose VLC from my applications folder which is version 1.1.7 and checked the open always with box and that solved the problem for me
