vlc media player, poor quality?

I tried out vlc media player to play back an mpg or two on the iphone.. but the quality was very very poor, major blockiness etc..

I didnt have this issue on my old windows mobile phone..

Does anyone know why this might be or a better player to view the movies?

(these movies couldnt be handled by itunes, so i did a drag and drop to the iphone via wsftp)
