VLC Media Player to convert video files .. need help (audio problems)

I want to convert my wmv files from my old PC that I transfered on my mac to mp4. I heard VLC was the easiest freeware program to do this, and I found a tutorial from a member here. On my first try it converted fine but the audio (sound) was about 3-4 seconds behind the video. I tried a few different files with the same results.

*Also, let me clarify I've only had my Mac for 3 weeks so I'm a newbie to macs, and I'm not computer savvy I've only used computers for basic school and internet stuff but with this Mac I want to learn more.

I hate to bump this so quickly but I'm just curious if anyone has the solution. I've searched and haven't found anything with this specific problem.
