VLC Requires Restart For Audio To Work When Plugging In HDMI

If I have VLC open, and plug my Mac into my TV via HDMI, I have to quit VLC and reopen it for the sound to come out the TV, otherwise it continues playing out the computer speakers. Same applies if I unplug HDMI, I have to restart VLC.

VLC is the only app that doesn't seem to switch sound output when this happens. No issues with other apps.

Is there a way to get VLC to switch audio output without having to restart?
