vlc rtsp problem

My ISP offers free VOD service. I was using Quicktime to play rtsp (mp4) files until recently they changed their audio to 5.1 and said that vlc should be used. I tried playing the mp4 videos with quicktime but only the video worked there was no audio. Both audio and video do work with VLC but the video is really choppy and sometimes you can see that multi-coloured screen for a few seconds before the video gets ok again. I've also tried a number of different media players but no audio only video.

Any solutions?
