Hooked up to Samsung LCD HDTV LNT-4665F as extended desktop

Something I've noticed recently in playing back a variety of media files (XVID, MKV, DVD, TS) is VLC looking like it's going into slow motion for a couple of seconds, then re-motioning itself back into normal speed. I tried checking the "Drop late frames" and also "Skip frames," but it still happens randomly.

I think I've noticed it more since I started running video on the Samsung as an extended desktop. I don't seem to remember it happening when I would use the "mirror desktop" option. I'm not running anything in the background and the Internet is off. The preferences are mostly at default. MPlayer 1.0 rc1 runs the same files fine.

Any idea what's going on?
