VLC stutters/bad DVD playback

Hi guys,

I have a new Macbook. I've been running the latest version of VLC on it without any troubles to watch .avi files. I went to play a DVD today, but VLC doesn't want to cooperate. I have made sure I have the region set on my DVD drive, and I have tried 2 disks - both work fine when using "DVD Player" but when I try to open in VLC, the playback stutters significantly, and the video is blocky and messed up.

Any thoughts on how I can remedy this? I'm an American living in the UK, so I really need VLC to work as I have a lot of Region 1 and Region 2 disks.

ETA: Apparently, now just regular .avi files are stuttering as well.

Hmmm. Maybe just try a simple reinstall of VLC.

You might want to try the VLC forums. I found this stickied on the first page.

try mplayer and see if that's any better, it's pretty much replaced vlc for me
