Is compression used when you create a VMWare Fusion 4 VM of Windows 7?

i.e. If Windows is about 30GB, will the VM image take 30GB on my MAC OS or will it be compressed?

The virtual disk is created 'sparse', the amount of physical space it consumes is dictated by the contents of the VM.

I have a 60 gig win2k8 vm and it's using 21 gig, with 60 gig being the upper limit.
