VM to external hard drive or install new Windows 8 on external

Hello MacRumors,

I have a virtual Windows install in VirtualBox. I used VBoxManage to convert my virtual Windows 8 machine to a .img file. With dd I tried to transfer this .img to an external drive, but it says "/dev/disk3: Input/output error". No idea why exactly.

Are there any other options to clone that image of my virtual Windows onto a external hard drive? If no, where can I find an actual, and working, guide on how to install Windows 8 on an external disk with a Mac that has no optical drives in it?
