I'm running Sierra, and want to use VMWare Fusion 8.5 to create VMs of earlier macOS and OSX operating systems to run older software.

I’ve followed youtube instructional videos, and am ok up to the point where I select CONNECT CD/DVD DRIVE and select the menu item “Choose a disc or disc image”.

The problem is, when I come to select the disc image, the macOS install file is greyed out.

I tried to select the exact same macOS install file that I created in a bootable USB, i.e. I know the bootable drive works because I used it as a bootable USB to install the actual macOS - but when I come to selecting it for installation in the VM, I can't select it.

I even tried selecting the original install file (before I turned it into a bootable USB drive, but that didn't work either?

How can I select the macOS disc image to create a VM that runs earlier versions of macOS/OSX virtually?

I found the answer on one instructional video. At the screen where it gives you are range of options of what you want to do, e.g. do you want to create a new VM etc, you drag and drop the installer file onto that screen, and it automatically knows that file you want to use.

I saw so many youtube videos, and only one of them mentioned this drag and drop feature of VMWare 8.5.
