This might sound a bit complicated, and perhaps I'm just confusing myself....

I'm trying to control a Mac via VNC. I've logged onto it via an iPad and can see my desktop/touch the screen to move my VNC cursor etc. What I really want to do, though, rather than using the 'VNC cursor' by touching the screen is to keep using the mouse that's connected to the machine and simply view my progress on the iPad via VNC, basically using the iPad as a monitor for my Mac and nothing else.

I've tried running VNC in 'view only mode' but even in this mode I still can't see the system cursor, and clicking the mouse it seems to be relegated to only the top left corner of the desktop (it will click the little 'apple' symbol but won't move at all....), plus then I don't have control of the system via my iPad either.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about here? Am I just using VNC wrong? Would I be better off using another remote desktop app/protocol?
