Hi all,

After realising that Mavericks' built-in VNC option has no way to configure the (gorgeous but impossible to use) high-quality display over a broadband connection, I tried to find an alternative.

I installed Vine Server (based on a forum recommendation), which does indeed allow you to dial the quality-level back for slow connections. However, unlike Apple's built-in VNC server, whenever I try to connect remotely while the iMac is sleeping, it wakes, but the screen does not turn on. This leaves a blank screen on the VNC client. As soon as you click the mouse, it all works as expected.

Someone else suggested LogMeIn as an alternative in this situation, and indeed it does seem to work as expected (once you perform a WOL separately to do the initial wake). On connecting with LogMeIn, the screen is shown as expected in the client.

My question is: does anyone know a VNC/other server/client configuration that will WORK (and allow you to configure quality settings), but not cost me $99/year to use?

Many thanks!

(P.S. - For reference, I have a Late 2013 iMac 27")
