I've been trying to get a VNC working so that I can run my G4 desktop headless and control it from the couch with my G3 powerbook.

I've tried Chicken of the VNC and VNCviewer. I configured Apple Remote Desktop as the VNC server on the G4 as well as I can see. COTVNC will "see" the server and the correct port, but when I try to connect, it times out. VNCviewer also times out.

I've read that ARD doesn't want to start up as a VNC server if there is no display detected, and that this can be tricked by plugging adapters in to the display connector. I've done this with both the ADC and the DVI outputs. Booting and running with a display connected doesn't seem to help.

Server: G4 867 Mhz DP over ethernet
Client: G3 500 Mhz Powerbook over 802.11b
Router: Netgear 802.11g WAP/router
Both machines running OS 10.4.8

Any ideas??
