Ok, for the first time in a long time, I'm am really impressed by a smartphone other than the iPhone.

I've been looking at the Nexus S from Google coming Dec. 16th to the states, and I have to say that I'm pretty jealous. It's the first handset running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it looks more capable than iOS4 and much cleaner than Android 2.2 (almost as polished as iOS4).

In particular, check out Voice Actions on Gingerbread. This really sold me.

Here's to hoping Apple is doing something amazing with the Siri acquisition a while back.

It's available on Android 2.2 (Froyo) too, and whilst it looks impressive in the demos, I found it didn't work that well in practice as is normally the case with voice control (particularly in less than silent environments such as vehicles)
The actual recognition algorithm is performed by Google's servers and I'm sure it will improve over time, but it's really more of a gimmick at the moment

I wasn't aware Android was capable of all that stuff in 2.2. I guess time will tell as to how the performance is.
