I Cannot seem to find a way to voice record on my Macs. I have Snow Leopard 10.8 on two of my computers and OS X Mavericks 10.9 on my MacBook Pro.
Shouldn't there be a simple voice message recorder app somewhere? What is it called. Can I download such an App for free? I can't find it as part of Garage Band or another program. I found places to configure speakers and microphones, and things about taking voice dictation, but not something as simple as recording voice.

QuickTime can do it. Also, Audacity is free and will also do it. Here is a very detailed tutorial for both:
