voice volume lower on 3gs?

My wife bought a iPhone 3GS on launch weekend, and she's quickly come to love it. There's only one thing. Compared to my 3G, the volume on the phone when she's making calls is very low. With the volume turned all the way up on both phones, the 3GS is noticibly softer.

Is this a defect on her phone, or something more general? Has anyone else noticed this?
