Voicemail capacity

I have 40 or so "deleted messages" on my iPhone voicemail. Any ideas on whether these are stored on a server or on the phone itself? (my guess is on the AT&T server).

Is there a capacity? Can your iPhone mailbox fill up? Any way to "pop" them to the device for storage similar to email?

Yeah it's on the A&TT server. If it wasn't and on the phone itself instead, you could play your messages when you have no signal

That's the thing that is confusing. Once the voicemail is transmitted to the phone, you can hear the messages whenever. I listened to messages on the plane today when my iPhone was in airplane mode.
