VOIP with a Mac

I am a former sunrocket customer in search of a new phone plan. Currently I am using my cell as primary, but would like a pay as you go secondary option for home use. SKYPE is the only one that comes to mind with a pay as you go option...the others require monthly fee.

My question is what is a good VOIP phone (handset) for the Mac? Most of the ones I find on Amazon mention windows as the supporting OS, so I'm not sure if they work with OS X.

Is there a better VOIP option that I'm not aware of other than SKYPE?

Plug in any landline style handset into a SIP phone adapter (e.g., SIP's call-in-one) to make VIOP calls using your traditional handset. For your software phone use Gizmo. I used this setup as my "roll your own long distance company" for about 2 years. It works like a charm.
