Finer stores everywhere.
In OS X 10.8.5 (original and supplementary update), I find that when I press the volume keys, my machine will momentarily beach ball, then proceed to very slowly adjust the volume. As an example, if I press the volume-up key four times, my machine will usually beach ball for about 2-3 seconds, then increment the volume one bar at a time roughly every 2 seconds, so that it takes about 8 seconds for the total adjustment for the four times I pressed volume up. I get the same beach balling followed by the 2 second delay between bars even if I hold the volume key down for several seconds. If I go back and forth holding the volume keys, my machine will beach ball for quite awhile until it slowly catches up.

Rebooting will get rid of the problem for several minutes only. Permission repair had no effect (no surprise). The guest account doesn't seem to suffer from this issue (though the reflective base never seems to load on its Dock, so it's not entirely free of problems), which is interesting.

Anyone else encountered this issue?
