Volume and On/Off buttons broke off 3GS

I wondered if anyone has had a similiar problem of their buttons falling off their i-phone 3GS ... It was the volume button that first came off quickly followed by the on/off button. I've only had my i-Phone 5 months and I already had to pay to replace a cracked screen. I'm not paying anymore. What exactly DOES Applecare do? It's a rip off!
