Volume/Brightness Notifications Disappeared?

My volume and brightness notifications have disappeared. You know, the rounded-corner square bezel that appears in the middle of the screen when you change the volume and brightness. Is there a setting in System Preferences that I've missed somewhere or is there cache that needs deleting?

I can change the brightness and volume no bother with the buttons. It's just the notification box that doesn't come up anymore. It's just a pain as I have to look up to the top corner of my screen to see if my MacBook actually muted or not. (yes, I'm that lazy that I can't be bothered to move my eyes)
