Volume buttons don't work in High Sierra

Here is another strange thing:

After updating my mid 2013 MacBook Air 13" to High Sierra, controlling the volume through the keyboard does not function anymore.
OS has been updated to High Sierra with latest updates, no updates pending.
The right type of keyboard is defined.
Other special keys, like brightness, or keyboard lightning work.
Anybody has a clue?

NVRAM reset, plugging headphones in and out.

Sounds like an NVRAM reset is a common thing, but it was new to me
