Volume buttons "stuck" on headphone remote

When I press either the up or down volume button on my wired headphones (three button remote) plugged into my Macbook with High Sierra, it will go up/down but will continue to raise/lower the volume until I press the button again to stop it. I'm assuming this is a software issue with OSX; but not if it's a bug or if there's some setting somewhere (and this is a feature somehow).

Is this just me having this issue?
 
Nobody else has this issue? If you press the up/down volume on your wired headphones it works as expected? (one click = one increment of volume)?
