So this is what happened tonight.

First I updated "Maintenance" - System Maintenance Utility to Ver 1.1.6.

Then I ran Maintenance and the the initial "Verify Startup Volume". This generated an error and suggested a repair using "Disk Utility" on Tiger CD.

Loaded Tiger CD, selected utilities and ran "disk repair".

This generated a "First Aid Failed" with the following red warnings:

"Invalid sibling link" "Volume check failed"

Followed by :

1 HFS Volume - "Error - The underlying task reported failure on exit"

Anyone have experience with this error? Any suggestions on a next step would be greatly appreciated.

I sometimes have more luck with fsck through Single User Mode. Otherwise there are third party apps like DiskWarrior which are better at repairing some of these errors than Disk Utility. However, I'm usually pretty unforgiving when it comes to these sorts of errors. It's often the sign of a failing drive so I usually end up buying a new one instead. Hard drives are so cheap nowadays that it just suits me better than relying on something that could be so unreliable. Whatever you end up doing, make sure you back up all your data, and keep it backed up. :)

Thanks MJ. I tried FSCK in Single User....No luck. Failed again. All Backed Up and ready. Off to Apple for a new drive tomorrow..

Thanks for the response
