I've been having a problem with the volume on my macbook. The volume buttons make the sound, but the volume doesn't go up or down. The problem sometimes goes away when I plug my headphones in and out, but not always. Is there a fix for this?

hmm does it not adjust the volume at all? or does it to it sometime? or is there just a delay on the volume change?

What model computer is it?

Sometimes the volume keys work, other times they don't. When they don't work I have to go into system preferences and manually change the volume. I'm using the 2.0 alum macbook.

You might want to schedule an appointment at your Apple store. Fiddle around with it a bit more, but you'll probably want to take it in.
