VPN For local wi-fi games across the internet?

Hi folks,

So recently my friend got an iPhone 3G (I know old but it was a gift). We wanted to play Scrabble over the internet but crappy EA are unable to offer that. If my theory is correct, couldn't me and my friend connect to a VPN in order to play local Wi-Fi games over the internet?
