I'll be going to china and was thinking of getting a VPN . I don't mind paying a yearly fee but what is the most reliable VPN for Mac OS ? I heard Astrill was pretty good ?

I use astrill. If you find a good server, you can stream youtube HD instantaneously, which to me is a definition of a great VPN. Cant recommend it enough.

I'm thinking of getting Astrill but they offer a lot of add ons , should I just get the monthly service or do I need the router / home plan ? etc..

how much are you paying for switch vpn and can you use two devices ( phone and laptop ) with basic monthly service ?

I am paying the 59.99 a year for 1 device with no addons. It works great for all the computers.

Now I am thinking of adding the 5 dollar a month addon for family sharing, which allows for 5 devices at once. That will be great for me. Otherwise I dont have any of the addons except for regular service.

I use WiTopia's PersonalVPN Pro which allows me to connect on my MacBook Pro, iPad Mini and iPhone 6. I have used it for over a year and have had great service and customer service. I use OpenVPN on all devices.

Now I don't use their software even thought it works very good on my MacBook Pro, I use paid software called Viscosity, more settings to customize my OpenVPN settings. On my iPad Mini and iPhone 6 I use OpenVPN Connect, it's free and allows always on connection and auto reconnect.

Overall I am happy with WiTopia and I have tried many VPN services.

Usually I use Amazon EC2 as a VPN which has free usage for a year. Although I dunno how to set it up on Mac.

There are two VPN that I use from time to time on Mac.

The 1st one is Tunnelbear which is available in several platforms. It gives you a monthly allowance of 500mb, with option to pay for more. Works reasonable fine, and is very easy to set up.

The 2nd one is VPNGate. It is completely free, and allows you to connect to several servers. Simple to set it up on the Mac as well. Doesn´t require you to download anything.
Only problem is that the speed of the servers aren´t usually that great, and the one hosting the server can decide without any warning to disconnect the server you are using.
There are several servers to connect to so it isn´t really a problem to find a new one if that happens. Although if you are working on something that requires you to be connected, it can be rather problematic.

I'm guessing these are for personal use. If you work for a company, they might have a VPN available. That's what I use. Its "free" with my employment. :)

Raspberry PI and l2tp, cheap as chips if your keeping your current internet connection :-

root@vpn:/home/pi# pppd --version
pppd version 2.4.5
root@vpn:/home/pi# xl2tpd -v
xl2tpd version: xl2tpd-1.3.1

I had to downgrade Openswan to get it to work

Linux Openswan U2.6.37/K3.12.22+ (netkey)
