Hello, I am sure this has been addressed but I could not find it. On the 8 plus, it says VZW for the network instead of Verizon.... did this change for the new phones? I already checked and wifi calling is off.

Which version of iOS 11 (11.0, 11.0.1 or 2, 11.1 beta 1)?

11.0, havent done the last two updates yet.
Some have reported seeing this, mostly on iPhone 8 (Plus?) phones. I think so far the assumption is that it might be something that is there to be used mostly for iPhone X (and/or it perhaps shows up when there are more icons in the status bar to save some space).

Mine tends to switch between VZW and Verizon and my WiFi calling has been off consistently. I never have that option on. I have the 8 Plus and I’m running the current iOS.

I had this show up when for about 2 days. And then it disappeared. WiFi calling was not enabled on my iPhone 8+

Unless you have a specific reason, enable it.

Having dead spot free phone call reception in a basement is a god send. Gone are the days of worrying and avoiding places without cell reception when I'm on call for work.

I have the same thing on my 8+.

I don’t know if it matters, but it says “VzW” when WiFi Calling is off, but it says “VZW” when the WiFi is on. I don’t know if the case of that Z makes any kind of difference.

Is the OP referring to the attached photo? I’ve got an 8+ and my wife has an 8 and they both seem to toggle back and forth between “Verizon” and “VzW”. There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason as to why they switch. Maybe it has to do with the individual towers being updated to the newer “VzW”?

Sorry if I'm missing something but what does it mean when you have VzW and LTE when Wi-Fi is disabled? I'm using an iPhone 8 w/ 11.3.1

It was the VzW that through me off. It used to say Verizon.

As this and several other threads on the board hint at, there is no real rhyme or reason to why one cell tower is VZW and others are VERIZON. And if you go to some of the Android boards, will see that those phones run into this as well.

Guessing newer towers are VZW as makes for a "cleaner" banner.

ADD: seen a thread where someone mentioned that this might be a carrier settings thing.
