I was intrigued by that, since I also have a year old iPhone 5 without any insurance. But don't they want to inspect the phone or something? I don't see why they are offering this.

I've seen carriers (T-mobile and ATT) do it in the past. I guess they figure gouge you for something rather than nothing.
