So I made the mistake of letting my kids use my old computer (2009 MacBook Pro) and I need to get some files off of it but they've somehow caused the W and S keys to stop working (likely from slamming on them too hard). However, my password to login has an S in it so now I can't login.

Is there a way to get the stupid on screen keyboard to pop up so I can click my password in, without having to login first? The parental controls are too strict on my kids user accounts so I can't do anything from theirs. Please tell me there's something I can do without dropping hundreds at the genius bar. I just want some files off of it!

You could try resetting the PRAM. Shutdown, startup while holding P,R,Command and Option keys. Hold for a couple of restarts then release. See if the keys work.
Do you have a USB keyboard? Use instead of the laptop's KB, etc. This is the easiest option. Any USB KB will work; doesn't have to be an Apple one.
Do you have another computer and a Firewire 800 cable? Boot the old laptop into Target Disk Mode (hold down 'T' key on restart), plug FW cable into both (you might need an adapter if the other computer doesn't have FW800) and the 2009 MBPro hard drive will mount on the second computer's Desktop giving you full access, etc. Hope this is helpful.
