This may be common knowledge. It may even be listed in these forums.

But for an absolute age I'd tried and failed to get the brightness keys working on 2011 MBPs (8,2; 8,3).

After having given up for some time today I Google-bashed the Interwebs and discovered the following:
  • Open Device Manager
  • Locate Display Adapter
    • Mine was listed as 6600M and 6700M
  • Uninstall the driver, choosing to delete the driver (checkbox in dialog)
    • Screen drops in resolution
    • Display adapter lists as generic; VGA compatible
  • Scan for hardware changes
  • Display adapter refreshes with 6750M driver
And now I change the brightness on my screen again.

Hopefully this is of use to anyone who ended up in a similar position to myself.
