Depending on how a couple of things go I might be ordering a 7,1 in the next few weeks. I've figured out how I want to spec it for the most part, but one thing I'm still figuring out is the GPU.

Currently, I'm running Catalina on a Skylake hackintosh tower with a Sapphire Nitro+ 5700 XT. If possible, I want to keep at least that level of graphical performance moving to the Mac Pro, so naturally that means either ordering the Mac Pro with a W5700X or pulling the 5700 XT from the hack tower and putting it in the Mac Pro.

I would love to have the extra silence that comes with the MPX GPUs, but I've seen a number of people reporting various issues with their W5700X's, ranging from graphical corruption to lockups to reboots. I haven't seen any of that with my 5700 XT hack tower — it's been rock solid, even though the two GPUs are largely the same (aside from the W5700X's doubled VRAM) and presumably run the same drivers. This makes me wonder where in the stack these issues are occurring.

So I'm curious to hear from those who have equipped their 7,1 towers with an aftermarket 5700 XT: what has your experience been? Which variant of the card are you using? If the aforementioned bugs occur in Mac Pro's with any type of AMD 5700 card, it'll be hard to justify the purchase.

I ordered mine before the release of the Pro W5700X. I have an Aorus RX5700XT and it's been trouble free for me. Except - I have an Apple recommended LG UltraFine 24" monitor with only USB-C inputs. I am using a Bidirectional USB Type-C to DisplayPort Cable. With this setup I have no boot screen. When I used the card with my old monitor with a DP and with a DP cable, I had a boot screen.

Other the the boot screen, everything else is fine.
