Wacom intuos tablet not working with iMac 24" 2009

I have an older Wacom Intuos tablet, 9x12, with a 9-pin serial plug. I tried connectiing it to my 2009 iMac 24" via the usb port, using a Sabrent usb/r232 adapter cable. It didn't work. What's wrong? ps- I'm a layperson.
