The 16 Pro/Max and 16/Plus show Modem Firmware 1.0 on iOS 18. This strongly suggests all four models are using the same baseband, or X75 in this case.

If true, Apple really went all-out with their upgrades on the base iPhone 16. While tech savvy people obviously see the 16 Pro as a better model, the base 16 is very compelling for the less tech savvy people.

I would say the 16/Plus meets expectations. It’s supposed to have the latest non-Pro chip with latest modem. But I wouldn’t be surprised once Apple modem is used, they’ll bifurcate it for marketing reasons.

It’s the 16 Pro/Max that disappoints with 8GB RAM. Given AI requires 8GB minimum, not sure how Apple justifies having the minimum there.

While that is good news. Isn’t the “latest & greatest” the X80?

Yes, but Apple is always 12-18 months behind Qualcomm and Broadcom’s announcement dates and actual adoption. X75 is the latest modem we can realistically expect Apple to adopt this year.

For instance, Wi-Fi 7 solutions from Broadcom were announced availability in April 2022.

iPhone 16 Pro and Max use X71 modem not X75. It’s a derivative of the X70. Supposedly missing multiple features from the X75.

You're right, X71 seen in teardowns.

Confirmed by IFixIt, I never expected to get the X80, that was always going to be a very long shot but not to get the X75 is definitely disappointing, I'm guessing it's probably because it's better than their own modem they want to start using soon...

Not the end of the world but I'd hoped for better.

It’s called being greedy.

At the launch event, I was expecting Apple to announce support for 5G Advanced, given that the X75 modem is capable of it. I was curious why this feature was missing from the iPhone 16 specs. Now it's clear why.

Big, if true.

Where did the X75 claim come from? The modem spec is not listed on the Apple website. Was it mentioned during the presentation? I'm blanking on where we found out the modem was supposedly an X75.

It’s was a natural expectation. Apple has been using Qualcomm since iPhone 4. Every year, they’ve adopted a newer modem. The last time Apple used a custom part was SE3 with X57.

Multiple teardowns of U.S. and global models confirm X71 this year.

The 15 Pro and Pro Max got the X70, the 16 Pro and Pro Max should have gotten the X75, and the 17 Pro and Pro Max should get the X80. Android phones will soon get the X80 modem. My guess is that we will get the X76 modem in the 17 Pro and Pro Max. What are your guesses, X72?

Not every year. Some iPhones had an Intel modem in them.

- iPhone X (some models)
- iPhone XS and XR
- iPhone 11 and 11 Pro

You’re right, I didn’t mention the feud years. But even with Intel, Apple has used publicly listed, fully updated modems each year, starting with iPhone 7 XMM 7360.

We just don’t know what X71 is.

If I had to guess, it’s a lightly refreshed X70 fabbed on N4P instead of N4 for X70.

So, can anyone confirm if the US version of the base iPhone 16 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem? I am still a bit confused as all the teardown videos I have seen appear to be international versions of the base iPhone 16.

Thanks!

Did the ifixit tear down have a SIM tray? I’m going to rewatch and pay attention. Is it true that the US version is the only model that doesn’t have a SIM tray?
