Ok I’m a NOTCH FAN. I love me my notch. I’m never the one to hate the notch because it serves a purpose. But are you telling me there’s no Face ID on the MacBook 16 or 14? I read there’s Touch ID sensor. i really hope I’m wrong cause this was pretty lame design choice. At least don’t let it take so much space?!

I was really happy to see the notch thinking Face ID On the Mac. But man I’m bummed. face ID is perfect since the orientation changes much less than a phone or iPad. plus the can lock the screen when Face ID stops detecting the owner. I prefer Touch ID on my iPad mini more so but I’m a Face ID fan as well. I neber enter my password on my iPad mini.

i bet they saved faceID for next generation to have something new to show...since this update is already big enough and lets not forget that this design is here to stay for at least 3-4 years. So the space is there for faceID, no redesign is needed

Yeah, I keep waiting (and waiting) for Face ID and what the addition of True Depth sensors could mean for air-gesture control of the UI, tracking of head position for Spatial Audio...

Assuming that some day Face ID does come to Mac it'll be interesting to learn why Apple delayed it for so long. No doubt Craig or someone like him will do an in-depth interview where this question is asked and answered.

I get that the notch is useful even without Face ID (well, except for those whose Menu bar/Status bar is so crammed with stuff that there's no room for the notch) - smaller bezel = larger display and/or smaller enclosure.

There are two ways to look at the notches (so to speak), like the half-empty/half-full glass. I think an edge-to-edge bezel that hides the camera is wasteful of space. I'd rather have some useful info flanking the notch than nothing at all. Others see the notch as an intrusion into the symmetry of the screen.

The trouble is that this benefit is not extended to Full Screen Mode. Currently, Apple is hiding the notch by creating an artificial bezel in Full Screen, which goes against the whole point of having Full Screen Mode in the first place (more screen real estate by hiding the Menu bar).

Sure, it would be even nicer have cameras/Face ID without either bezel or notch, but practically speaking I can't see how they can hide the camera and other sensors behind a display without having compromised display performance in the camera/sensor area (lower brightness due to some sort of backlighting kludge, for example). But yeah, I get it - even if performance was compromised, it's likely better than the notch (although once you detect the area of reduced performance, can you ever un-see it?).

Regarding Face ID. Does the hardware exist in the new MBP's notch and could just be turned on at some point? Or is it additional sensors needed in a coming model?

No, its additional hardware required and we're assuming a degree of re-enginering would be needed to get it thin enough to fit in the lid of a MBP.

Oh face ID is coming next year in second update to these notchbooks and when they do its gong to be a revolutionary change and everyone who bought this first wave notchbookpro is going to be screwed. They are all gonna be left out and they will come on here bitching and the die hards will defend apple saying that the notchbooks still perform exactly like they did when you bought them so stop complaining. You'll see.

lol. But the 2021 models will still perform the same? I’m fully in agreement that it will be in a 2022 or 2023 revision, perhaps along with HDMI 2.1 and who knows what else.

I don’t use Face ID on my iPhones (never used Touch ID either), so I have no concern if it’s added next year. But yes, there will be copious bitching.

Having Face ID next year will not be enough for an upgrade from my pending MacBook Pro Max. If it did have something I need I can just sell my computer and buy the face ID one. No complaining, no second thoughts. That’s just how it works

Why would you need it? When’s the last time you wanted to unlock your MacBook without putting your hands on the keyboard?

Seriously, everyone begs Apple to put TouchID back on the iPhone and complains about FaceID - but then there’s so much complaining when they leave TouchID as the authentication method for the Mac. And it makes way more sense than FaceID for the Mac.

The notch still needs to be there to house the improved camera, along with all the other sensors, while allowing the bezels to shrink way down. And it will disappear during normal use, ensuring that the menu bar doesn’t intrude on the rest of the screen.

Would the screen be too far away typically for FaceID to work well?

Tim
I think it would work well if you're working on the laptop - it does work brilliantly on the iPad Pro with Magic keyboard - authenticating becomes genuinely seamless. But I guess Apple are also aware of how many people use their laptops in clamshell mode, so with the new standalone magic keyboard having touchID, maybe that's their preferred approach for the next while?

I'm sure it will come, but I don't think the size of the notch on the MBP is a sign of anything specific - I suspect its just that size because that's the size it needs to be for the current components.
