Yeah, I keep waiting (and waiting) for Face ID and what the addition of True Depth sensors could mean for air-gesture control of the UI, tracking of head position for Spatial Audio...
Assuming that some day Face ID does come to Mac it'll be interesting to learn why Apple delayed it for so long. No doubt Craig or someone like him will do an in-depth interview where this question is asked and answered.
I get that the notch is useful even without Face ID (well, except for those whose Menu bar/Status bar is so crammed with stuff that there's no room for the notch) - smaller bezel = larger display and/or smaller enclosure.
There are two ways to look at the notches (so to speak), like the half-empty/half-full glass. I think an edge-to-edge bezel that hides the camera is wasteful of space. I'd rather have some useful info flanking the notch than nothing at all. Others see the notch as an intrusion into the symmetry of the screen.
The trouble is that this benefit is not extended to Full Screen Mode. Currently, Apple is hiding the notch by creating an artificial bezel in Full Screen, which goes against the whole point of having Full Screen Mode in the first place (more screen real estate by hiding the Menu bar).
Sure, it would be even nicer have cameras/Face ID without either bezel or notch, but practically speaking I can't see how they can hide the camera and other sensors behind a display without having compromised display performance in the camera/sensor area (lower brightness due to some sort of backlighting kludge, for example). But yeah, I get it - even if performance was compromised, it's likely better than the notch (although once you detect the area of reduced performance, can you ever un-see it?).
