Wake on LAN without time capsule/ airport extreme?

I'm trying to use splashtop remote to access my computer from school on my iPad, but I don't want to leave it on all the time. I connecteed my laptop to my router via ethernet via Ethernet cable and it doesn't work. Is this even possible? If not, is there any sort of 3rd party software that will do this?
