Wake on (wan) iMac switched off, is it possible?

When I was a pc user I used to wake up my pc using wake on lan/wan feature.

With mac I can wake up the imac when it is asleep without any problem, but I can't when it is switched off; with pc is possible even when it is shutdown

Is it possible with Mac too? How?
