I erased the MBA and then reinstalled to factory settings - really difficult as I had all sorts of issues but eventually after several hours managed to get there.
Still not wakening after longish sleep as before now no key wakens it. have to restart form options
This means that the software previously on it Office, Acrobat and Carbon Copy Cloner must not be causing this problem with wakening ?
It is still within 14 day period - got form Apple online refurbished - always thought machines were said to be well rechecked before resale ?

Is there any way I can test hardware for fault as I really don't want to return this fully speced MBA M1 -any advice please appreciated as I have now reached my limits here
Should say a short sleep is OK as id]t wakens as it should normally

Just now finished the Diagnostic tests on the MBA M1 and there were no issues found code ADP000.
Yet I still have the wake form sleep issue - can anyone please advise if this means hardware including logic board is OK and its likely to be a software ie Big Sur issue in which case I'll hold onto the MBA and hope a software update will sort this out
Please help - advise

It seems likely that your hardware is good.
Is CCC now M1 compatible? Maybe try uninstalling that and see if the problem disappears.
If you have access to another Mac you could re-install 11.3 via Apple Configurator 2 which will erase everything from your machine and install a fresh copy of everything on the drive.
If you go down that route I'd try the M1 as it comes and see if the problems disappear then install any apps/programmes one at a time and see which one is causing the problem.

A second alternative is to contact Apple Support and see what they say, though they'll probably advise a re-install anyway.
Good luck!

Good luckThanks Quackers for taking the time to reply as I thought at first no one was going to reply. Anyway I tried doing full erase

Thanks for that Quackers - Unfortunately I tried erasing the Macbook HD and reinstalling and even with only Big Sur running and no addition Apps installed still same this happened. I should say on my other MBA an Intel 2020 model no issues at all with additional software and Big Sur.
Going to return and order again as I guess despite no hardware issue on Apple Diagnostics testing it still has wake up issues. Probably just get brand new and not refurtb again even though all my notebooks have always been refurbished ones in the past with no issues

You're welcome.
I appreciate that but was that done through the recovery environment or with Apple configurator 2?
AC2 method definitely appears to me to be a nuclear type approach where everything on the disk is destroyed and replaced in full - including recovery volumes and firmware.
But the decision is yours. I would contact Apple Support at a minimum.

Hi again not sure what you mean Configurator 2 ? I did erase of Mac HD from Disk Utilities and then reinstalled again via options it was very slow process took a couple of hours - I thought that erased everything including any apps and data I had -which it did.

I don't know much as you've probably gathered as I'm more of an iPad user, and would be happy to use iPad for Office etc except its just too more complicated when it comes to saving files etc

I've done a re-install in a few ways and in my view the Apple Configurator 2 method is the most thorough way but you need access to a second Mac capable of running the later versions of AC2 and not everybody has that.
I think your best option is, as you say, to return the M1 for a refund and re-order a new one or alternatively if you're happy with the specs of the machine you have you can ask Apple Support about getting a straight replacement, which may be quicker.

Just to update - I returned the refurbished MBA M1 to High St store, cancelled the Genius appointment and got new MBA M1 -no issues at all sleeps and awakens every time - reluctantly will return this one as I decided I'd prefer the @Tb and 16Gb RAM configuration from new - just have to have the tip specs even though this 512 Gb and 8Gb is great !
