"waking" MB monitor while using external monitor

I have a 22" Dell external monitor on my MBP.

I know that I just close the cover to my MBP to shut off the screen.

What do I do in those instances that I want to use both screens?
There has to be something simpler than restarting the MBP?

Go to system preferences then display!

I think you'll see a settings box on either screens when you go there.
