Walk-in purchases of 4S still happening?

Prototypical

I realize I'm seriously late to the party, but are people still able to walk into carrier stores or Apple stores and walk out with iPhones... or are most stores depleted by now?

It seems like the initial launch went fairly well and people were able to pick them up on opening day, so I'm hoping the same is still true. :)

I walked in to Radio Shack this past Sunday and picked mine up (att, white, 32gb). Although they said it was the last one they had. Calling around to Best Buy's and Radio Shack's looking for one, sounds like the ATT phones are gone but they had VZW phones available...not sure about Sprint. (Resorted to calling BB's and RS's because Apple and ATT stores were also all out).

Just call the Apple Store or ATT Store where you will be going to and ask if they still have any. This way you don't waste your time only to find out they're none left untill the next shipment.

I just went to my Verizon store today, and they are completely out of stock. They have a waiting list where you pay a $50 deposit and you get one when they have them. The guy said the next shipment is 11/4, might be different for different stores/locations.

Reserve it the night before (9-12) and pick it up next day

I was trying to go through my local VZW store, but I'm hearing the same thing that Jmclark is... Completely sold out in town and the next shipment is 11/4. I have a grandfathered Alltel plan that I want to make sure stays active, so I'm a little anxious about going through the Apple store. But I may just give it a shot and throw a fit if they try to switch me to a Verizon data plan.

Does the Apple website change from 100% unavailable to available after 9? The store is currently out of EVERYTHING if you believe the site (iMacs and everything included).

It is really hit or miss around here. Our local Apple Store gets deliveries everyday but size, color and carrier is very random. They still had a 20 person line waiting when they opened this morning and no AT&T models.

Sprint

I received a call from Sprint Store on Tues. and was offered a 16GB Black. On Wed., I got a call and was offered 16GB Black and a 32GB White. Still waiting for a 32GB Black. I'm almost certain I'll get it by next week. I moved up to no# 1 for a 32GB Black at this one particular Sprint Store.

Yep, but my local apple store has been out of AT&T 4s phones every time I've called or stopped by.

For iPhones, they only have availability between 9-12pm. Otherwise it will show unavailable

I've been in San Francisco for the past week and went past the Apple store they said they don't have any AT&T phones. I can't believe how many people have iphones!!!!!:D

I went right into Target which most people forget about but at least in Texas the Targets have mobile centers back in electronics which are run by Target but owned by Radio Shack.

I got mine at a Target store with Target Mobile. Thought I'd have to wait a couple of weeks, but the lady said they had a few in stock. Boo yah.

Apple Store,Radio Shack,Best Buy Mobile have them locally.Or order from apple online at 855pm and pick up next day.But they do go fast, usually w/i 30mins gone.
I ordered online from AT&T on 10/8 and mine will be delivered today-so 20 days total.

For AT&T iPhones, it's really rare, and only if you're lucky, will you find a 4S ready for walk-in buying. Most AT&T iPhones are reserved the night before in less than 30 minutes. I'm not sure if AT&T/Apple underestimated the demand for AT&T iPhones, but jeez, it's sold out quite literally everywhere!

Sprint/VZW, you might very well get lucky with the higher GB models like 32/64. 16GB in countless of the Apple Stores for both VZW and Sprint are reserved overnight.

Sprint is also sold out of the 32.

Ended up reserving a 32gb VZW in black last night at our Apple store. So stoked!

Check Best Buy website for availablility. If you do it right you can see the stock of all of the stores in your area. This is how I did it. I was able to get a White 32gb VZW 4S from Best Buy Mobile just from calling around.

i think this is true higher capacity models of Sprint/Verizon you can find easily compared to ATT

I walked in to Apple (Denver area) yesterday - heard them giving some dude a schpeal about having to reserve and hope the model he wants would be available the next day.

I wanted a black 32 for AT&T, asked the next Specialist if they had it (fully expecting the same reservation schpeal).

No 32's but they had a couple of 64's. I walked out with one.

Moral of the story - don't walk into an Apple store after just having sold your phone with nothing but a SIM card in your pocket. You'll walk out with whatever they have in stock :p

My family still has an Alltel plan and they had no problem at all activating my iPhone 4 (not S) that I picked up this past Tuesday. We are actually switching to a new plan because we're sick of paying $300 a month, but regardless my phone has been working much better than my old Droid Incredible ever did.

may be because of this same reason Verizon and Sprint iPhone 4S sales will even out with ATT? 16GB ATT model is the tough to find ...
