Maybe this is a very obvious point but here goes-- For those of you aesthetically repulsed by iOS 7 I recommend trying various background wallpapers on your home screen, it really does impact the overall look a great deal.

Ive been Using a basic wallpaper that blends from black to grey to white and it really tones down the look a great deal, makes the control
Center and folders look nice and not too garish.

In a way it's one of the more "open" things apple has done w an os --, since it's all based on these clear panels, it really lets you determine the look of your os.

I think partly that is the reason they choose solid color backgrounds as defaults instead of prettier ones.
 
Yep. Came to the same conclusion myself. I've always used plain black as I always go with a paired down simple approach. This just doesn't work with ios 7 as the folders and dock look off. So I've switched to something that is tolerable. Now - whether it's a good thing to have an OS that forces the user to make such aesthetic choices....
