I am looking to turn this picture into a tiled background (where you just see the image multiple times). But the settings will not allow me to do so. I don't want apple choosing what I can and can't have as my wallpaper.

This happens.

How do I get around this restriction?

Also: Is there an app that will create a tiled version for me?

The reason (I think) it won't allow you to tile the picture for your wallpaper has to do with the photo's resolution. Most of my wallpaper images can't be used in tile view(I think) because they are the exact resolution or larger to match my MBP display resolution.

Try GIMP. Copy the image, paste it into GIMP or another editing application, and then just keep copying and pasting until you have the picture that you want. For example, I have 2 photos in my wallpaper folder that can be tiled and their dimensions are: 550X468, and 640X960. I hope this helps.
