Wallpapers (custom or default, in 1600x1200 resolution, native to my monitor) look to be much lower quality on OS X. I have Windows 7 running inside a VM and with that full screen running the same wallpaper at native resolution, it looks crisp and sharp.

Are Apple purposely making wallpapers look poor on non-retina displays to make retina ones look even better?
